Choosing a Material for Internal Shutters

There are two kinds of shutters that you can choose from: internal shutters and external shutters. External shutters are used on the outside of your windows. They can block light and help you control the climate inside your home; however, their main focus is on protecting your windows from damage. If you live in a very storm-prone area, then some external shutters might be a good idea. They also help you create a look for your home that you might like. However, internal shutters are oftentimes more useful.

Internal Shutters

Internal shutters are built on the inside of your windows; they’re used to reduce the amount of heat and light coming through your windows. They allow you to create some added privacy as well as design the interior of your home. If the sun is too bright, you can close your window shutters in Perth to block some or all of the light coming in. You can open them in the morning to allow some more diffused morning light into your home. There are many options to pick from, but the most important decision will be the material you choose.

Choosing the right material is very important to the health and wellbeing of your shutters. Typically, shutters come in some kind of faux wood, basswood, and cedar.

Choosing the Material

The faux wood that is used is normally made of a polymer that has been reconstituted into boards designed to resemble timber. Oftentimes, the boards are even pressed with designs that make them look like timber grain. The faux wood is a great choice because it is normally waterproof and does not degrade, even in high heat and humidity. Such a feature makes it perfect to place shutters in bathrooms and wet areas. When you run the shower, the temperature in your home bathroom increases rapidly; the humidity does as well. Such humidity can warp or damage wood; faux wood should be designed to withstand that.

If you want timber, you have a couple of options. Basswood is a lightweight but strong wood. It is often used for musical instruments, and also makes great shutters. It will last for a very long time, but since it is lightweight, it will open and close easily. Finally, you can choose cedar. Cedar is resistant to mould, mildew, and decay. Also, it will release cedar oils into the air, lending a nice aroma to your home. That’s especially true if your windows are open. If your windows are open and a breeze comes through the shutters, it will disperse the cedar scent throughout the room.

It’s a very welcome scent that many people enjoy coming from their shutters. Cedar is a great material that is resistant to warping, even on humid days. All of these materials are great for shutters.
