Repointing a Chimney – What You Should Know

Chimney repointing is a maintenance process that involves renewing the outside part of the chimney’s mortar joints. If these joints are weathered, voids can form in the masonry sections or the bricks. In turn, water can enter a home. If you want to avoid water damage, you need to have your chimney inspected and any repointing or tuckpointing performed.

Signs that Your Chimney Needs Repointing

You can have tuckpointing services performed by Middlesex roofers. Before the work commences, the roofers will inspect the chimney and check the degree of wear. Your chimney needs tuckpointing if the following applies:

  • The chimney is leaning
  • The chimney is cracked
  • The mortar, in spots, is not level with the other mortar between the bricks

Some of the Benefits

Once you have repointing done, you will realise the following:

  • Any further mortar decay will stop, thereby eliminating any future serious issues.
  • The mortar joints will be stronger and the stability of the structure will improve.
  • Moisture will no longer get inside the chimney, a problem that can lead to rotting wood or mould and mildew.
  • You can avoid a complete rebuild of your chimney, thereby saving money.
  • The repair work will make your chimney look brand new.
  • The restoration will increase the value of your home as well as its kerb appeal.

Oftentimes, homeowners have tuckpointing done when they have a new roof installed. Whether or not you need a new roof, this type of repair is necessary if you want to avoid having your chimney rebuilt and ultimately paying a lot more money.
