You did read it correctly. The DroneSeed company in Tampa is behind drones planting trees. Although the technology that allows drones to assist in reforestation efforts is still being developed, the company plans to offer services to landowners with more than 10,000 acres, as well as state governments, beyond the Pacific Northwest, southeast, Canada, and Brazil.
Drones can help with reforestation
The new technology will enable forestry agencies to make millions of dollars in savings on replanting forests. It is estimated that it will cost around $100 billion to replant 300 million acres of forest lost worldwide over the past 20 years. Drones that plant trees would be significantly cheaper. According to the company, one drone operator can manage 15 units simultaneously. This is equivalent to 360 man-hours. This is an average of two acres worth of seedlings per tree planter.
Drones can be equipped with custom operating software and will be used to plant tree seed capsules and spray agricultural payloads like herbicides and fertilizer. They also collect data from the field. Drones will use air pressure to shoot the seed capsule into the ground. It is similar to a paintball gun. Cool, right?
The Federal Aviation Administration approved DroneSeed’s application to offer agricultural spraying services. DroneSeed plans to soon be able to grow to plant. Their goal is to work with commercial foresters in order to improve the efficiency of reforestation. It sounds great, right?
