Four Common Types Of Ants

Where one ant is found, a hoard is usually not far behind them. Ants are tiny insects that are still the most common reasons for a call for an exterminator. They are social bugs and usually appear in large numbers, irritating homeowners. To aid in getting rid of an ant infestation, it is a good idea to have basic knowledge of the common types of ants so they can identify them and know the best ways to get rid of them.

Odorous House Ants

These ants are part of a group called the “sugar ants,” odorous house ants tend to have numerous colonies with many queens and homes. This makes them an irritating nuisance. As a result, it is not uncommon to find these ants nesting in any small crack or crevice in the home. Usually, they are found in the kitchen since that is closest to their food source.

Besides calling in pest control services, the best way to get rid of these ants is to place sugary baits around where they are hanging out or near the suspected food source. It is also helpful to clean up any messes that could potentially draw them inside.

Pavement Ants

These species of ants are similar to the Odorous ant, as they are also in the “sugar ant” family and have many homes and queens. One big difference is that they contain stingers. They do not sting readily, but it is still possible if they feel threatened. They are also commonly found under concrete, patios, sidewalks, driveways, or basements since they primarily mine soil and sand.

The best way to remove these ants would be in a similar way one would get rid of the Odorous ant, sugary baits. Sealing any holes, cracks, or holes will also help these ants not get into the home.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are a larger species of ant, and their bodies are either entirely black or red. These ants are more dangerous because they have a painful bite, and since they are most active during the night, it is a bit more challenging to know if they have entered the home. They also tend to make their homes in the walls, similar to termites.

These ants can cause significant structural damage, so if an infestation is discovered, the best option is to seek out a professional exterminator to get rid of them properly.

Fire Ants

Known for their reddish-brown color, these ants are aptly named. They are an aggressive ant species and will attack if their nests are disturbed. Their stings are famously painful and are not a pleasant experience for a person. The good news is that these ants are not fans of indoors. Instead, they prefer the openness of the outdoors. Despite this, they can still become a nuisance if they make a home in someone’s yard.

If a nest is discovered, pouring hot or soapy water on the nest can be the most effective way to get rid of them. Chemical insecticides are also helpful, but they must be specifically for fire ants.
