What is the Role of Residential Electricians?

You may be thinking about building a house or is in the process of constructing a new one. Perhaps you have lived in an area for some time and suddenly encountered an electrical issue. These occasions call for electrical contractors and residential electricians.

Residential wiremen are responsible for the electrical design of homes, like houses, apartments, condominiums, and other buildings. They are well-versed in electrical wiring installation and addressing electrical concerns. A common problem experienced in households is when their circuit breaker requires repair. Residential electricians can quickly fix this problem.

History

Inventors in the late 1800s were interested in electrical devices. They rushed to find the latest discovery due to high demand and interest from society. As a result, by the late 19th century, electrical appliances became mainstream. As more homes switched to electrical wirings and lighting systems, the safety of these homes required engineers and technicians. Hence, three specializations emerged for electricians, namely, domestic, commercial, and industrial. The skilled specialty birthed to what we know as residential electricians.

Primary Duties

Residential Electricians can perform various tasks, including:

  • Planning: Residential wiremen can work alongside architects, contractors, and engineers to develop the blueprint of electrical systems inside the home. They decide where to place the electrical wirings, outlets, air conditioning, and ventilation systems. For this reason, most of them can understand and interpret technical diagrams.
  • Installation: They are also in charge of installing electrical wirings, devices, relays, switches, control devices, power outlets, and household equipment. Installing will require manual labor, which involves carrying heavy appliances, tinkering for hours under cramped spaces in homes or the outdoor.
  • Maintenance and Repair: For support in troubleshooting, such as changing to a new outlet, a residential electrician will fix it for you so that it runs a new line.
  • Compliance with Governing Rules: Residential Electricians must adhere to appropriate standards to ensure safety and protection for its coworkers and client residents.

Qualifications

An important aspect to note is that residential electricians entail skill specialization because the job is risky. It is vital that they are equipped with a level of competency that meets the standard set by Australian law. To become one, they will need to go through an apprenticeship or training program. The program will often take four years. After this, they must register for a license before starting to work. The process varies from state to state, but in Melbourne Victoria, they must register with Energy Safe Victoria, who is the independent technical regulator that manages the licensing of electricians.
